The avalanche danger has moderated from last week’s wind event, but wind slabs and persistent slabs remain a concern.  Red flags of avalanche danger in the form of cracking and “whumping” are still present.  Slabs may be more stubborn now, and that’s important to keep in mind in order to prevent a false sense of security.  Hard slab avalanches like those that could currently be triggered in Chugach State Park are the type that have the potential to release well above the trigger, increasing the consequences and making escape much more difficult.  In addition to the more typical avalanche hazards for skiers and riders, hikers and climbers should take note of wind loaded terrain along ridges and unstable snow on terrain features like ledges, benches, and mellower snow covered ice.
