The extended stretch of sunny, but cold, weather ends this weekend with warmer, wetter, and windier on the way. The weather change (i.e. dense clouds) could be seen moving in from the SE today while #climbing and skiing in the upper #Girdwood valley. Expect #avalanche danger region wide to increase this weekend. South of #Anchorage will be affected first and foremost, especially the #Kenai #Mountains. Saturday may provide another decent day for Anchorage and areas to the north; it’ll be your best bet for recreating in good weather and moderate avalanche danger before winds (and possibly #snow) increase avalanche danger considerably. For the Western #Chugach and #ChugachStatePark, increasing winds later Saturday will build fresh wind slabs and stress existing persistent slabs (with faceted weak layers at the ground and around buried crusts). Choose an #adventure appropriate for your skill and experience level and make sure you have the proper gear, attire, and knowledge when you head out. Leave a trip plan with your route and expected return time with a friend or family member staying in town, in order that they could initiate an emergency response if something goes wrong. Photos from a Mystery Mountain #summit and #ski today. Get out and enjoy your #PublicLands this weekend! Outdoor recreation is important for mind, body, soul, and community.
