Avalanche Danger Warning
Issued Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at 9am:
Dangerous avalanche conditions exist in the greater Anchorage area Western Chugach Mountains and in our primary forecast area.
In the past 24 hours, there have been extremely strong winds and over an inch of SWE has accumulated at mid elevation weather stations in both northern and southern zones of Chugach State Park.
Over a foot of new snow is likely in some alpine areas and combined with significant wind loading yesterday into today, HUMAN TRIGGERED AVALANCHES ARE LIKELY AND NATURAL AVALANCHES ARE POSSIBLE.
Beware of steep slopes above and connected to you (even if you’re on relatively flat terrain). Many popular trails in Chugach State Park are exposed dangerous avalanche paths.
We will try to provide a more thorough update ASAP.
