Avalanche danger in the Western Chugach Mountains of the greater Anchorage area is currently high due to more than a day of heavy precipitation and strong winds:
While the weather is expected to improve significantly on Monday with sunshine and light winds, avalanche conditions will remain dangerous:
Stormy weather is forecast to return midweek, which is expected to continue this phase of dangerous avalanche conditions for the foreseeable future.
2+” of SWE in the past 24 hours with 18+ hours of strong to extreme winds has severely increased avalanche danger.
Do not be fooled by the benign weather Monday; avalanche conditions will remain dangerous.
During this period of elevated avalanche danger, avalanches may be triggered naturally without any warning. Avalanches may also be triggered by humans and other animals from low angle, and even flat, terrain adjacent to slopes steeper than 30ยบ. Be mindful of steep, snow-covered terrain above and around you. Do no unwarily expose yourself to avalanche runout.
