February 7, 2018 Depressingly thin and sketchy #snowpack in #Anchorage’s backyard #mountains of #ChugachStatePark. Where there is blown in snow in catchment areas it’s generally 60-80cm of varied faceting layers with monster depth hoar at the ground. Gordon Lyon snowpit at ~3800’, 358* N aspect, 36* slope, 60-65cm HS, ECTN12 at ground on depth hoar. No propagation due to heavily faceted column that crumbled during stability test. However, deep whumphing in areas with a stout windboard near surface confirmed the extremely sketchy state of the thin and weak snowpack.
