May 2, 2018 5/2/18 #ChugachStatePark observations: Still a lot of coverage above and beyond Ptarmigan Pass with a few cm’s of fresh #snow on the valley floor, and over a meter in some wind loaded upper elevation areas. Wind loading has been extensive, and some very large winds slabs exist, but generally the recent snow seems to be bonding. Other than wind loaded catchment areas, there is generally 25-40cm of recent snow on upper elevation lee (west to north) aspects (moist, dense, but right-side up with driest and least wind affected snow at surface). Numerous natural wet loose avalanches to size D1.5 observed on all aspects but north (although even channeled northerly aspects had wet loose debris due to releasing snow from adjacent terrain). Small natural wind slabs to D1.5 observed on upper elevation north aspects. There will be a lot more wet loose #avalanche activity as soon as the sun shines in earnest, as steep and rocky terrain is still quite spackled with sticky fresh snow that has yet to release. Even without the sun, there was some snow, ice, and rock fall – which will increase when the sun shines. Slide-for-life, icy crust was observed in some areas on windward upper elevation southerly aspects.
