February 19, 2019 View this post on Instagram Copious amounts of blissful #pow were found up #SoFo this afternoon, but red flags of #avalanche danger were omnipresent: whumphing/collapsing, shooting cracks, and recent avalanches. Another big storm is on tap for Wednesday into Thursday with significant snowfall and strong winds forecast. Dangerous avalanche conditions exist in the Western #Chugach #Mountains of #ChugachStatePark. Danger is expected to remain elevated through Thursday. This past weekend’s storm brought several inches of snow and further developed a significant hard slab of wind packed grains above the typically widespread and well-developed basal facets and depth hoar of the Western Chugach valleys north of Ship Creek. This persistent slab problem will only become worse as the incoming storm hits, and the #snowpack will need ample time to reestablish equilibrium when the weather calms down.
