February 26, 2019 View this post on Instagram Heads up if you’re heading to #HatcherPass (if this extreme temperature inversion doesn’t break down): widespread wet avalanche activity up to D2.5 in size (more than big enough to bury and kill a person) observed on solar aspects this afternoon. Pictured are wet loose avalanches that came off Skyscraper south aspect from ~4000’ and ran ~800’. They almost ran to the road, which can be seen in the bottom of the photo at the sled tracks. The extensive wet avalanche activity mostly occurred yesterday and today, as it wasn’t present Sunday. The extreme temperature inversion had ridge top elevation temps slightly above/below freezing for over 24 hours. Northerlies are still holding great, creamy #snow. Although, the Willow side of the pass seems more wind-affected than the Palmer side. This makes sense as the Willow side was more exposed to the NW winds last week. The extent of the #pow harvesting since last Friday is really incredible! Stoked so many are finding bliss by visiting #Alaska’s magical public lands!!
